Brownie Glazed Lips
There has been significant criticism and claims of "cultural appropriation" levelled towards Hailey Bieber after a TikTok video she posted about her new lip regimen went viral.

Bieber stated in the video's description that she was "Ready for all the fall goodies including brownie glazed lips." The makeup look featured dark lip liner and clear lip gloss. Model and musician Justin Bieber's wife has been accused by some TikTok users of stealing a look popularised by women of colour in the 1980s and 1990s, including Black and Latina women.
Good Morning America
On "Good Morning America," Jillian Hernandez, a professor at the University of Florida's Center for Gender, Sexualities, and Women's Studies Research, discussed her work on the hyper-sexualization of the aesthetics of working-class Black and Latina girls.
According to Hernandez, "African-American and Latina women get denigrated for the manner that they portray their body, the way that they wear their hair." Words like "ghetto" and "ratchet" are commonly used. A fashion writer for the New York Times, Sandra E. Garcia, has cited Bieber's TikTok post as an example of a common double standard.
Garcia stated on "Good Morning America" that "[black women and Latinas] are being looked at as lesser than any other woman just because of the way they opt to do their own makeup." In contrast, "then another woman, a white woman, does the same thing, and her lip gloss is sold out and she is now the face of the fad." According to Hernandez, "stylistic or aesthetic gentrification" has been going on since Spanish Cubist artist Pablo Picasso took influence from traditional African art in the 19th century.
According to Hernandez, it was after studying African masks that the artist discovered the freedom to experiment with modern techniques. "As a result of colonialism, the West was able to make many technological advances. That's the source of this cultural appropriation, by the way."
The comment "This was chola lipstick in the 90s" echoed this sentiment. Admire the Chicana style.
In general, the Latinx and African-American groups have been supportive of those affected. People have mostly just commented with sarcasm on Bieber's 'brownie glazed lip' instruction, while some have been less tactful and stated the obvious:

Someone on TikTok joked, "Laughs in Hispanic," while another said, "omg queen you inspired my ta to do this in the 90's #latinaslay." When it came to Bieber and her supporters, TikTok creator Taija Reed was less forgiving than the rest of the community. "Y'all will do everything but give black and brown people credit," Reed says in the video. What the hell do you guys think you're doing? Be serious.
"Now it's part of the clean girl image, you want to rebrand it?" she posed to the audience.
Those who support Bieber have said that the Rhode Skin creator is actually influenced by her Brazilian mother and grandmother. Their arguments, however, fall a little hollow in the great scheme of things when one considers that the lip style in question is clearly taken from Mexican American and African American women.
Bieber has not responded to the claims of cultural appropriation or deleted the TikTok videos from her account.
